06/2023, Shanghai
The purpose of this project is to build a special kindergarten for the children in Huaqiao Town, incorporating elements of clouds, so that the children, who lack outdoor activities and are burdened by academic pressure in this area, can experience warmth and freedom. They can freely run and play here, as if running on the clouds.
In recent years, due to the rapid development of the city, the children living in this area have gradually lost their childhood activities and have been trapped in the steel forest made up of countless residential buildings, which has led to the deterioration of the local children’s physical fitness and the gradual increase of the obesity rate.
The spatial composition of the kindergarten is determined by analysing indicators such as children’s moods, activity intensity and level of benefit in different spaces.
When I was a child, I often wanted to get away from my parents and teachers and fly to the clouds so that I could be carefree. Clouds are what all children long for, with their varied shapes and soft textures allowing them to give full play to their imagination.
By analysing 20 cloud types of different heights in the atmosphere, their characteristics were translated into 2D and 3D symbols, which served as a source of form for the building.
In the morphology generation section, several representative cloud features were integrated with the existing site and combined with previous analyses of the children’s activities to construct different functional zones to meet the children’s different activity needs.
The design is also child-friendly, with components such as step handrails designed in-depth according to the ergonomic data of children aged 2-6 years to meet the comfort level of children.
Combine this with previous data on children’s activities and the habits of local children to envisage an ideal state of use for the site.
